History of Coimbatore

Tracing over 2,000 years — from ancient trade routes to a global industrial hub.

Kongu Nadu Region

Coimbatore, often called Kovai, boasts a legacy that stretches back over two millennia. Once part of the ancient Chera kingdom, the region later came under the influence of the Kongu Vellalar chieftains, shaping its identity as the heart of Kongu Nadu. Owing to its strategic location between the Deccan Plateau and the Malabar Coast, Coimbatore flourished as a vital trade corridor, linking inland regions with coastal ports and fostering early economic growth.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the city was ruled by the Mysore kingdom before being ceded to the British East India Company in 1799 after the fall of Tipu Sultan. Under British rule, it evolved into a key administrative and commercial center. The late 19th century marked a turning point with the rise of cotton ginning mills, transforming Coimbatore into a thriving textile hub.

The city eventually earned the title “Manchester of South India” due to its booming textile industry. After independence, Coimbatore rapidly expanded into a major engineering and industrial powerhouse, gaining global recognition for pump manufacturing and emerging today as one of Tamil Nadu’s most important economic and educational centers.
